It was the very last round of the cake walk.
Most of the kids had played the game long enough to win a confectioner’s treat. It only cost one ticket (25¢) per round and it was an easy game for the parents to sit back and watch as their kids walked expectantly in circles. These elementary students all hoped they’d win the next round, while most of their parents secretly hoped they wouldn’t.
Since the theme of the school carnival was American Pride, each of the cakes were decorated with flags, stars, and eagles—all in red, white and blue. Each square on the floor had the shape and name of one of the US states. Once one of the American anthemed songs would start the parade would begin. When the music stopped the kids would all look down to see what state they’d be rooting for to be called. The adult running the game would randomly select a state from a small set of 50 cards in a wicker basket. The winning child would clap their hands like they won the Powerball lottery and select from among the remaining cakes.
At least 50 cakes had already been given out by the time it was my families turn to run the game. We had a half hour to give away the last 25. The artful cakes had been taken, the scrumptious looking ones were gone too. Now what was l eft were the cakes that the elementary students had probably helped their parents make.
We were like a machine, gathering the tickets, playing the music, hyping up the kids, and calling out the winners. They cakes went fast, then the cupcakes, and finally we were down to a few packages of five oatmeal cookies each.
“Last Round!” I soon yelled out, not having to feign excitement that the circus was over. “Only one bag of cookies left!”
The kids grabbed tickets from their parents’ hands and stuffed them into the container on their way to their favorite spot in the circle.
And then the room slowed down, almost like you see in the movies. A skinny, little, red-headed boy wearing a well-worn Mutant, Ninja Turtle t-shirt raised his head to the ceiling and clasped his hands together in front of him in prayer. His lips silently formed the one word prayer from his heart, “Please…”
His theology was a little off—Jesus wasn’t on the library’s ceiling—but he was in the room and he heard the child’s prayer.
The music started and the kids started moving around the circle. When the prayerful child landed on the square in front of her, Kona Jesus pushed the stop button on the CD player, Jamie Jesus whispered the name of the state he was standing on, and Chad Jesus announced the winning state with barely a glance down at the selection of cards in his hand.
A skinny woman, except for her round, pregnant belly, had to lean down and tell her son that he had won.
“I did?” he said in disbelief, and then, “I did!” in belief as the grace settled in. Then he ran over to the table to redeem his five, beautiful cookies.
And Jesus smiled.

Check out my other blog, Jesus or Squirrel. It’s a fun attempt at figuring out what should truly be credited to Jesus, Religion, Hype, Tradition, Superstition, Satan, Oral Roberts and his Friends, or The Squirrel.
