“You know, this world is going to Hell in a hand basket.”
The preacher was speaking very loud, much louder than his proximity from his mouth to my ear necessitated. “I’ve heard that saying. What do you mean by it?”
“Well, it’s the Gosh, Darn SIN!
“Sure, sin is a problem. Thank God he had a remedy for it.”
“Well, yes, fer sure… but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t still running rampant in this country. We got to be doing sumthin about it!”
“What do you suggest that we do?”
“Take a stand! Find our voice! Make a difference!”
“Oh, sure, those things… but like how exactly?”
He leans close, looking around to see if there is anyone else within earshot, but then still says very loudly. “Well, fer example, Sumthins got do be done about the Homosexuals.”
“Oh, them; no doubt something does have to be done… I’m thinking we are supposed to love them.”
“Well, yes, there’s that, but I’m talking about things that will really make a difference.”
I had an idea where he was leaning, “You mean like quarrel with them?”
“YA!”
“And fight against flesh and blood?”
“EXACTLY!”
“Jesus, help us…”
“Yes, Jesus! Help us!”
Though we both prayed prayers with the same words, I don’t think we meant the same things. We may not even be praying to the same Jesus.
“Preacher, could I be so bold as to share an observation with you?”
“Fer sure.”
“It isn’t working.”
“What isn’t?”
“Your tactics.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you said you wanted to change things, but you aren’t. The fruit from your labors wouldn’t make a jar of jam.”
Hoping he might make a connection himself instead of having to turn the light on for him I asked him one last question, “Why do you think you are being so ineffective?”
“Oh, that’s easy,” he said, not pondering any responsibility he might need to face, “It’s cause them Homosexuals won’t listen to a Word of Truth we say. They are preset against hearing us before we say a thing; and you know why that is?”
“No, why?”
“It’s because they have a Spirit of Deception around them—they are conditioned not to listen—they’ll never be able to hear the truth because of their sin.”
And I walked away for the conversation very sad, because I realized the reason this preacher was talking so loud was that his own fingers (if not a demon’s) were lodged firmly in his ears.
